February has generally been a tough winter month. In the area where our stable is located, we have had heavy snowfall which, combined with strong winds, has been blowing around and at times made the roads completely impassable. The longing for spring and warmth becomes almost overwhelming.
What has warmed us during this cold period is the week at Scandinavium for the Gothenburg Horse Show. A success – perhaps precisely because we all needed a break. Something that shifted our focus away from snow clearing, frozen water pipes and bored horses impatiently working their way through fences.
This year, GHS was more than just the competitions inside the arena. Many of the visitors to our stand had travelled to the Eurohorse fair simply to stroll around, watch the activities in the paddock, grab something to eat and meet friends who share the same deep passion.
I believe this combination – a large fair presented in a welcoming way together with a solid programme in a bigger paddock – is ideal. Here you can see everything from police horses and military dogs to western riding, elite riders and eventing clinics. In previous years, I felt the fair almost died when show jumping was taking place in the arena, but this year that was not the case at all. Whether it was dressage or show jumping on the schedule, there were always people at the fair.
A busy fair is of course good for us. Having activities where you can watch and learn without everything costing a fortune is also valuable. Above all, it is a way to get close to the sport – close to our beloved four-legged partners in many different forms and constellations.
At a time when our sport is often – and sometimes rightly – questioned, this is an excellent opportunity to see, listen, discuss, learn and share. To me, equine welfare is about knowledge and transparency. Living a life with horses means lifelong learning. All of us who live active equestrian lives must do so in a way that always withstands transparency.
Finally, I would like to thank everyone who visited us in Gothenburg. Old friends and new acquaintances – you are what make Eurohorse such a joy.
